Launching the 747-8 Intercontinental

Boeing launched the 747-8 family on 14 November 2005. The launch orders were for freighters — from Cargolux and Nippon Cargo Airlines — which set the tone for the whole programme.

The passenger version waited another year. On 6 December 2006, Lufthansa became the first airline to order the 747-8 Intercontinental, and it remains the largest operator of the type.

Why the freighter went first

The order sequence was not an accident. By 2005 the market for very large passenger aircraft was already narrowing, as airlines shifted toward twin-engined widebodies that could fly the same routes with two engines instead of four.

Air freight was different. The 747 freighter’s nose door and main-deck cross-section had no equivalent, and operators who needed that capability had nowhere else to go. Boeing launched into the demand that actually existed.

What Boeing promised

The pitch for the Intercontinental was an aircraft that was new where it counted — a stretched fuselage, an entirely new wing, GEnx-2B engines and a 787-derived flight deck — while remaining familiar enough that a 747-400 operator could adopt it cheaply, sharing a type rating and most ground equipment.

Lufthansa aside, few airlines took it up. Beyond a handful of carriers and some VIP customers, the Intercontinental never found the volume Boeing had hoped for, and it was the freighter that carried the programme through to its end in 2023.
