The VIP concept

Boeing Business Jet VIP interior concept for the 747-8.

A Boeing Business Jet VIP concept for the 747-8: a private interior in an airframe designed to carry 467 people.

This turned out to matter far more than it looked at the time. Only 48 passenger 747-8s were built, and airline demand was weak almost from the start — but head-of-state and VIP customers kept buying, because the combination of range, floor area and four engines had no substitute.

That market produced the aircraft’s final chapter. Two 747-8s are being converted into the VC-25B presidential aircraft, and a Qatari 747-8 entered service as an interim Air Force One in 2026 — so a VIP 747-8 will still be flying long after the last airline retires one.
