The 747-8 is fully e-Enabled: it can move data between the aircraft and an airline’s ground systems using wireless links, without anyone carrying it by hand.

What it replaced

Older aircraft handled data physically. Navigation database updates, performance figures, cabin logs and fault data arrived and left on disks, cards or paper, carried to and from the flight deck by an engineer or a member of crew. Every transfer was a task somebody had to schedule, perform and record.

What changes

With the aircraft e-Enabled, that traffic happens automatically when the aircraft is within range of a ground wireless network — typically as soon as it arrives on stand.

The practical effects are all about time:

  • Faster turnarounds, because a routine data task no longer needs a person on board.
  • Faster troubleshooting, because fault information can reach engineering while the aircraft is still inbound. Parts and specialists can be waiting at the gate rather than being called out once a problem is found.
